This is an oversized Hardbound publication, Professionally Restored, in very good condition; 97 pages plus Prelims made up of 2 Title Pages and a Preface with ad addtional 35 full page sized plates, measures 10” x 12”, no dust jacket.
Bulletins such as these were normally issued by the Bishop Museum in standard wraps with stapled spines, in limited quantities, published for the purpose of making a written historical record available to the accedemic community.  Over the years I have come across just a few differnt hardbound copies such as this with Tapa Cloth over the board surfaces and leather, quarter board style over the spine and corners. Further the staples were removed and the spine is stitched.  I have not been able to determine to whom these Tapa and Leather editions might have originally belonged.
It was received with the boards split down the gutters next to the spine with significant chipping at the ends. It was sent out for restoration, the spine leather being replaced and the original title block being laid down plus some additional sprucing up.  The case is now quite secure and most attractive.  Corners are toed in with some wear but no wearing through to the edges of either the leather or tapa.  The book has been fitted with a custom Dust Jacket of 5 ml. clear Mylar to protect it in the future.
The interior is clean and firmly bound, no loose or misaligned pages, printed on glassine stock  There is modest age toning but no frank foxing, a bump the lower free corners but no creasing.  Perhaps about 10 or 12 leaves toward the front at the lower edge next to the spine were found to have small tears or splits the largest being about 1”.  These may have occurred when the binding was originally stitched. They were repaired with Archival Quality mending tissue to prevent further runing or damage.  There are no previous owner names, notations, marks, other creases or tears.
Mr. Brigham, at the time, the Director of the Bishop Museum produced the first significant works with respect to the Ancient Hawaiiana.  The texts are extensive with numerous large b/w in text photos plus an additional 35 full page plates.  Contents of every photo is numbered and labeled.
This publication has been reprinted, both in full and exerts, however it is rare to find one of the 1902 1st editions still solid and complete.  Truly this Tapa and Leather bound piece would be an outstanding additional to a Pacific Island Collection.
