Description
New, unused, never displayed, handmade jewelry box featuring a "Hula Girl with Ipu" on the lid by "Aloha Wood Art by the Le Family". The inside of the box is lined with a soft red material, and the lid features an oval mirror with frosted dolphins and the Hawaiian greeting of "Aloha". From the Aloha Wood Art website, "Hula Kahiko is the ancient Hawaiian dance that is renowned around the world for its beauty, power and elegance. It is a unique dance that was banned for a period of time after the arrival of protestant missionaries from 1830 to 1870. It was revived during the reign of King David Kalakaua or the “Merrie Monarch” (hence the annual Merrie Monarch Festival). This design depicts a female dancer holding an 'Ipu' (a hollow gourd) which is a Hawaiian drumming instrument." The approximate dimensions of this piece are 6.375” W x 4.875” H x 2.25” D, and the usable space inside is approximately 5.25” W x 3.75” H x 1” D. Item has been in storage for a while, so original packaging shows signs of wear.
