Agriculture Handbook No. 679
Washington, D.C. 1989
This is the full sized 1st Edition issued in Wraps in very good condition, 321 pages includes CONTENTS, an ABSTRACT, LIST OF TREE SPECIES, LIST OF MAPS, LIST OF COLOR PLATES, an INTRODUCTION, and INDEX, measures 8 ½” x 11”, no dust jacket.
The soft wraps feature a spray of the Ohia tree on the cover.  They are clean, age toned but lie flat with no creases or curling of the corners.  There is one narrow black line to the upper page edge of the book.  The book will be fitted with a custom sized, clear acid-free dust jacket in an effort to maintain its lovely appearance; quite unusual in a large format softbound book of 30 years.
The interior reveals contents that are tightly bound with no loose or misaligned pages.  A bump is noted to the upper free corner of the latter half of the block.  No significant age toning or foxing are noted. There are no ownership indications, no creases or tears.
This large volume is extensive with over 150 different trees listed, each with a thorough description of its origin, details of its importation if applicable, its appearance and propagating characteristics, estimates of the numbers in Hawaii including areas where they may be found.  Throughout are the full-page sketches of most every species.
”The late Otto Degener, author of ‘Flora Hawaiiensis,’ made available his published drawings.  His notes on many species, especially uses by the early Hawaiians, have been adapted with credit.”
Also, included are twelve full-page color plates of paintings by noted botanical artist Isabella Sinclair from INDIGENOUS FLOWERS OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, c.1885.
These are printed one on each side of the page.
Issued in 1989 in conservative numbers, this publication in the large format is out of print and rarely available.
Although it has been reissued, the subsequent printing is a scaled down version, less deluxe in an effort to make it more affordable.
This original volume would make an invaluable reference tool in an Island library or botanical collection.
