Description
Circa. 1927John Melville Kelly (1879–1962)
Early Waikiki Beach beach blanket! Four-color silk screen on a heavy (almost canvas) cotton/rayon material. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel (The Pink Palace) opened in 1927 and John Kelly did their artwork. We believe this piece is the work of Kelly, and for The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The paint colors are still strong. Our hunch is that the fabric was originally pink and bleached-out in the hotel's washers? Ideal accent piece for a museum's Hawaiian themed swimsuit or beach scene display.
